Gas Storage
geological modelling, drilling and completion engineering, rock-mechanics, solution mining

East Yorkshire, UK is home to two large underground gas storage facilities. The Aldbrough location was jointly developed by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and Statoil UK and has a total of nine gas storage caverns, which have been in operation since 2012. At the Hornsea (Atwick) location SSE has been operating nine more caverns since 2002. These eighteen caverns are located at depths between 1,700 m and 2,000 m and have a geometric volume of up to 370,000 m³ each. The combined storage capacity of 500 million m³ provides approximately 30 percent of the volume of natural gas stored in the United Kingdom and is therefore an important part of the country’s energy supply.

DEEP, in cooperation with the international engineering company Atkins, is providing the engineering services for the maintenance, repair and operation of the entire project. This includes the 3D modelling and the subsequent assessment of the rock-mechanics of the site, detailed well modelling of specific load cases including the evaluation of gas storage completions, the assessment of the geological and solution mining related aspects of the storage caverns, as well as planning and feasibility studies related to aspects of drilling and completion.
